What to Expect During Compression Therapy
If you have never tried compression therapy before, it is easy to feel uncertain about what it actually involves. The short version: you put on inflatable sleeves, lie back, and let the device do the work. But there is a bit more nuance worth knowing before your first session.
What Compression Therapy Is
At Innovation Wellness, we use Normatec compression — a dynamic air compression system that rhythmically inflates and deflates to mimic the body's natural muscle pump. The compression moves in a sequential pattern, starting from the extremities and working upward, which is designed to support circulation and help move fluid through the limbs.
The goal is to support recovery, reduce the feeling of heaviness or soreness in the legs or arms, and help the body clear out the buildup that comes from physical activity, prolonged standing, or general circulation sluggishness.
What the Session Actually Feels Like
Most people find compression therapy comfortable and relaxing. Here is what a typical session looks like:
- You arrive and choose your zone. Compression is available for legs (thighs to feet), arms (shoulders to hands), or hips and glutes. Many people come in for legs, but athletes and people with upper-body soreness often use the arm attachments.
- You put on the sleeves. The sleeves zip or fasten over your clothing. You do not need to change into anything special — wear comfortable, loose clothing.
- The device cycles through its compression pattern. You will feel the sleeves inflate in sequence — starting at the lower portion and moving upward in waves. The pressure is firm but not painful. Think of it like a very thorough squeezing massage that works from the bottom up.
- You rest for the duration. Sessions typically run 30 to 60 minutes. Most people relax, read, or just close their eyes.
- You step out feeling lighter. The most common thing people report after a session is that their legs feel noticeably less heavy. That effect tends to be immediate.
Who Gets the Most Out of It
Compression therapy is used by a wide range of people, not just athletes. The categories that tend to find it most useful:
- Athletes and active people who want to speed up recovery between workouts or events
- People who stand or sit for long stretches — nurses, teachers, office workers — and deal with end-of-day leg fatigue
- Frequent travelers who experience swelling or discomfort from sitting in planes or cars for extended periods
- Anyone dealing with general swelling, puffiness, or that heavy-leg feeling that does not go away with rest
It pairs well with other recovery services. A lot of clients at Innovation Wellness will do compression alongside infrared light therapy or PEMF in the same visit.
Before and After — What to Know
You do not need to do anything special to prepare. Drink water before you come in — hydration helps with the overall feel of the session and with circulation in general.
After the session, you can resume your normal day immediately. There is no recovery time needed. Some people notice the effects most clearly later that evening — legs that feel easier to move, less puffiness, better sleep.
How Often Should You Come In?
That depends on your goals. People managing chronic swelling or heavy legs might come in weekly. Athletes in heavy training blocks sometimes come in two or three times a week around hard efforts. For general maintenance and recovery support, once a week or every couple of weeks tends to be a reasonable starting point.
Your provider can help you figure out a schedule after your first session based on how your body responds.
